SWALEC Bowl
Blaenau 19 Nantgaredig 15
Fellow Division 6 side Blaenau ended Nantgaredig's winning streak when the two sides met in the second round of the SWALEC bowl. After a keen contest in the league earlier in the season both sides knew it would be a close match. Blaenau got off to the stronger start and took a 6-0 lead through penalties resulting from their pressure. Despite being camped in the Nant 22 for much of the opening quarter Blaenau were unable to extend their lead and Nantgaredig started to wake up from the bus ride. Some big hits in defence started to put Nant onto the front foot and they came back into the game with a penalty from Meirion Davies to narrow the gap. Then a rare drive from a lineout sucked in the Blaenau back row and created space for the fly half to cross for a try that he converted himself to give Nantgaredig a four point lead at half time.
Nantgaredig started the second half in commanding style. Fluid movement and efficient recycling saw Iwan Thomas scoring from a chip through by Barry Thomas, importantly the conversion was missed. Nantgaredig then committed suicide. With a cushion of two scores they should have shut the game down but instead errors then started creeping into the Nantgaredig game with silly penalties being conceded and failure to secure first phase possession. Blaenau narrowed the gap through a penalty and then concerted forward pressure saw a rumble from 5 metres for a try which was converted to put the home side ahead by a point. Nantgaredig conceded another penalty to give Blaenau a cushion and leave themselves chasing a try. As usual Nantgaredig came again strongly in the last quarter but a combination of good and lucky defence by Blaenau held them out and the hosts now advance to the next round. Despite the end of the winning streak there was much for the young Nant side to take from the game, both in terms of positives and identification of areas for improvement. They now face Mynydd y Garreg at home in the next league fixture.
